スティーヴン・フォスター若干１６歳の作。ニューヨーク・ミラー紙に「セレナード」という題で掲載されたジョージ・Ｐ・モリスの詩に作曲した作品なのだそうで、その２年後に出版されています。まだあまりフォスターの個性が現れているという感じでもなくて私はそれほど傑作とも思わないのですが、美しいメロディと歌詞もあってかけっこう彼の作品としてはよく取り上げられます。
