In the village where he married， Doctor Eldebury tarried; And for fourty years our people knew him well. How he listered us and bled us， How with calomel he fed us， Only I am living now to tell. 結婚した村に エルデベリー先生はずっと留まった そして四十年もの間 わしら村人は先生をよく知っていた 先生がどうやってわしらのカルテを作り 診察してきたのかや どうやってカロメルの薬をわしらに飲ませてきたのかは わしだけが今は生き残り 語ることができる 先生の薬はひどいもんじゃったが それでも先生の心は親切だった そして、陽気で甲高く声を張り上げて こんな風にな 「しっかりな 君！すぐに良くなるさ！ さあ 薬を飲みなさい おとなしくね そうすればどんどん気分が良くなるから」 （コーラス） 数えてご覧 墓地の苔むした大理石を！ わしらの老医師とその患者たち 彼らはそこに居るんだ みんなどんな天気であろうと 彼らは一緒にそこで待っている ずっと長い間探し求めていた「どんどん気分が良くなる」ことのために 医者の中にはラテン語で喋るのもいる 妻にサテンの服を着せて飾り立てるのもいる だけどわしらの老医師は そんなたぐいの医者じゃなかった たった半ドルの診察料で 見つけられるかね 学識のある医者を 山の中を駆け回ってくれる 昼も夜も？ サドルバッグを背負い 「蒼ざめた白い馬」に跨って 遠く離れた患者のところに彼が飛んで行くのをご覧 こう言いながら 「しっかりな 君！すぐに良くなるさ！ さあ 薬を飲みなさい おとなしくね そうすればどんどん気分が良くなるから」 （コーラス） おお！先生の編み出した処方！ わしらは若いころ苦しめられたもんじゃ 先生の絆創膏 先生の粉薬 そして先生の丸薬で 渇きを打ち消す水は わしらが熱を出して死にかけとるときの 丘の冷たい泉から存分に得られた！ それでも先生は悪い人じゃなかった 酷いこともしなかった わしらは信じておった - 希望があったんじゃ 先生が近くにおるという 先生の 「しっかりな 君！すぐに良くなるさ！ さあ 薬を飲みなさい おとなしくね そうすればどんどん気分が良くなるから」 （コーラス） |
