It was our war-ship Clampherdown Would sweep the Channel clean， Wherefore she kept her hatches close When the merry Channel chops arose， To save the bleached Marine. She had one bow-gun of a hundred ton And a great stern-gun beside. They dipped their noses deep in the sea， They racked their stays and stanchions free In the wash of the wind-whipped tide. It was our war-ship Clampherdown， Fell in with a cruiser light That carried the dainty Hotchkiss gun And a pair of heels wherewith to run From the grip of a close-fought fight. She opened fire at seven miles -- As ye shoot at a bobbing cork -- And once she fired and twice she fired， Till the bow-gun dropped like a lily tired That lolls upon the stalk. “Captain，the bow-gun melts apace， ”The deck-beams break below， “'Twere well to rest for an hour or twain， “And botch the shattered plates again.” And he answered，”Make it so.” She opened fire within the mile -- As ye shoot at the flying duck -- And the great stern-gun shot fair and true， With the heave of the ship，to the stainless blue， And the great stern-turret stuck. “Captain，the turret fills with steam， ”The feed-pipes burst below -- “You can hear the hiss of the helpless ram， “You can hear the twisted runners jam.” And he answered，”Turn and go!” It was our war-ship Clampherdown， And grimly did she roll; Swung round to take the cruiser's fire As the White Whale faces the Thresher's ire When they war by the frozen Pole. “Captain，the shells are falling fast， ”And faster still fall we; “And it is not meet for English stock “To bide in the heart of an eight-day clock ”The death they cannot see.” “Lie down，lie down，my bold A.B.， ”We drift upon her beam; “We dare not ram，for she can run; “And dare ye fire another gun， ”And die in the peeling steam?” It was our war-ship Clampherdown That carried an armour-belt; But fifty feet at stern and bow Lay bare as the paunch of the purser's sow， To the hail of the Nordenfeldt. “Captain，they hack us through and through; ”The chilled steel bolts are swift! “We have emptied our bunkers in open sea， “Their shrapnel bursts where our coal should be.” And he answered，”Let her drift.” It was our war-ship Clampherdown， Swung round upon the tide， Her two dumb guns glared south and north， And the blood and the bubbling steam ran forth， And she ground the cruiser's side. “Captain，they cry，the fight is done， ”They bid you send your sword.” And he answered，”Grapple her stern and bow. “They have asked for the steel. They shall have it now; ”Out cutlasses and board!” It was our war-ship Clampherdown Spewed up four hundred men; And the scalded stokers yelped delight， As they rolled in the waist and heard the fight， Stamp o'er their steel-walled pen. They cleared the cruiser end to end， From conning-tower to hold. They fought as they fought in Nelson's fleet; They were stripped to the waist，they were bare to the feet， As it was in the days of old. It was the sinking Clampherdown Heaved up her battered side -- And carried a million pounds in steel， To the cod and the corpse-fed conger-eel， And the scour of the Channel tide. It was the crew of the Clampherdown Stood out to sweep the sea， On a cruiser won from an ancient foe， As it was in the days of long ago， And as it still shall be! |
そいつがわれらが軍艦クランパーダウンだった 海峡をきれいに掃海してたのは そのため 艦はハッチを閉じたままにしてた 陽気な海峡に荒波が立つときに 船酔いした海兵隊員を救うために 艦は百トンの艦首砲を備え そして大きな船尾砲もついていた 二つの砲は鼻先を海の中に突っ込んで 固定条を引きちぎり 柱を倒したもんだ 風に吹かれた潮に洗われると そいつがわれらが軍艦クランパーダウンだった 出くわした 軽巡洋艦に こいつは華奢なホチキス砲を積んでいた そして一対の踵は逃げ出すのに打ってつけ 緊迫した戦闘現場から 艦は発砲した 七マイルの距離で- まるで浮かんでるコルクを撃つように- そして一度発砲し 二度発砲すると、 艦首砲は項垂れた 萎れたユリのように 茎の上に丸まった 「艦長 艦首砲はすぐにヘたりました 「甲板梁も壊れています 「 良いのではないかと 一時間か二時間休むのが 「継ぎ当てしましょう 粉々になったプレートを」 すると艦長は答えた 「そうせよ」と 艦は再び火を噴いた 一マイルにまで近づいて- まるで空飛ぶ鴨を撃つように- そして巨大な船尾砲は堂々とかつ誠実に撃っている だが船が伸びあがると しみひとつない大空に向かって 巨大な船尾砲は立ち往生した 「艦長 砲塔は蒸気で満たされています 「蒸気配管が下で破裂しました- 「聞こえましょう 力を失ったポンプの悲鳴を 「聞こえましょう ねじれた回転台が詰まるのが」 すると艦長は答えた 「旋回して進め！」と そいつがわれらが軍艦クランパーダウンだった こうして艦は大きく旋回した ぐるっと回り 巡洋艦の砲火を避けようと まるでシロイルカがオナガザメの攻撃に出会ったかのように 彼らが凍った極地の海で戦うとき 「艦長 砲弾が素早く落ちて来ます 「そしてそれより速くわれらは倒れて行きます 「そしてこれでは英国軍魂にもとります 「こんな八日巻きの時計の中でじっとしてるのは 「この死を奴らは見えねえんでさあ」 「伏せろ 伏せろ 勇敢なるA.B. 「俺たちゃ漂う 船の梁の上 「突進するこたあない 船はまだ動ける 「それじゃもう一発ぶっぱなして 「そして死ぬのか 噴き出す蒸気の中で？」 そいつがわれらが軍艦クランパーダウンだった そいつは装甲帯をつけていた しかしたった五十フィート 船尾と船首にだけ あとは剥き出しだ 雌豚の太鼓腹みたいに ノルデンフェルト砲の雹に対して 「艦長 奴らは俺たちを徹底的に切り刻んでる 「冷延鋼の遊底は速い！ 「われらの石炭庫は空っぽだ 海の中に 「奴らの榴散弾は石炭があるべき場所で破裂したんだ」 すると艦長は答える 「漂うがままにせよ」と そいつがわれらが軍艦クランパーダウンだった 向きが変わって 潮に乗って 船の二つの黙ってる砲は睨みつけてる 南と北とを そして、血と泡立つ蒸気が噴き出して来る そして船は巡洋艦の脇腹を削ったのだ 「艦長 奴らは叫んでる 戦いは終わったと 「奴らは要求してる あんたの刀を寄こせと」 すると艦長は答えた 「引っ掴め あの船の船尾と船首を 「この鋼を求めている 奴らにこれを今くれてやる 「短剣を抜け 乗り移れ！」 そいつがわれらが軍艦クランパーダウンだった 吐き出してきた 四百の水兵を すると火傷を負った火夫どもは喜び叫んだ 腰をよじらせて戦いを聞いたとき 足を踏み鳴らして 鋼壁の囲いを越えて 彼らは巡洋艦を端から端まで掃討した 司令塔から船倉まで 彼らは戦ったのだ ネルソンの艦隊が戦ったように 腰のところまで裸で 足も剥き出しにして 昔の戦のように そいつは沈み行くクランパーダウンだった そのボロボロの舷側を持ち上げ- そして百万ポンドの鋼塊を運び去った タラや死体を貪るウナギのもとに そして海峡の潮の藻屑に そいつはクランパーダウンの乗組員たちだ 毅然と立って海を掃いていた さっきの敵から勝ち取った巡洋艦の上で その昔の日々のように そしてこれからもまだある日々の！ |
