Quantum mechanics invented 100 years ago is unrealistic and useless, relying on fictitious quasiparticles to explain all physical phenomena.
Quasiparticle is unreal, having fake (= effective ) mass and charge, which are freely-adjustable to deal with different phenomena, so meaningless in predicting new reactions.
For useless quantum physics to get research funds, physicists needed to create fake target = fictional quantum computer which is supposed to exploit fantasy parallel worlds for faster (← ? ) parallel computing ? ← still Not reality.
To hide the inconvenient fact that the current quantum physics is useless with No progress, academia spreads fake news to deceive people into falsely believing their researches are worth taxpayers' money.
If you carefully read each quantum technology news, you will notice they make No progress, just using misleading phrases to get your hopes up.
This week solid-physics is still full of unreal quasi-particles such as phonon ( this, this, this ), exciton ( this, this ), magnon ( this, this, this ), polariton ( this ).
Other unreal quasiparticles are plasmon ( this ), skyrmion ( this, this ), axion ( this ), Dirac fermion.
The 2nd last paragraph of this news just vaguely says "These results may also help scientists identify other materials with this combination of ingredients ?" ← just talking about "imaginary future". Still useless research. Unreal Dirac quasiparticle is used ( this abstract ).
The 6th paragraph of this news just vaguely says "even in empty space at zero temperature, (unreal) virtual particles, like photons, flicker in and out of existence ?" What's this unreal virtual particle useful for ? ← The last sentence of this abstract just says "This provides a way to manipulate phonons (= unreal quasiparticle ) via thermal photons ?" ← Unreal virtual particle is useful only for manipulating unreal quasiparticle ? Meaningless research.
The 1st and 2nd paragraphs of this news just vaguely say "Yet quantum computers may be able to complete more complex calculations ? .. It's going to be a while before quantum computers are ready to tackle major scientific research questions." ← just talking about "imaginary future". Nothing is realized now.
The last paragraph of this news just vaguely says "now also thinking about how quantum information ideas can further pinpoint the nature of .. evolution of the universe, perhaps as quantum computers will do one day ?" ← Just speculation abou fictional objects, still useless research.
The last paragraph of this news just vaguely says "This new breakthrough will potentially enable a new class of infrared detectors based on graphene with high sensitivity, These new detectors will potentially impact applications such as night vision ?" ← just talking about "imaginary future". Still useless research. Fictitious band model is used.
The last paragraph of this news just vaguely says "We will use this new information carrier, the electron spin wave, for future electronic devices and quantum information advancements ?" ← just talking about "imaginary future". Nothing is realized now.
The last paragraph of this news just vaguely says "my guess is, carrying a quantum computer in your backpack will probably tip the house ?" ← just talking about "imaginary future". Still useless research.

The 1st paragraph of this news just vaguely says "Researchers from around the country are using it (= SLAC particle collider ) to examine the atomic structure .. COVID-19 ?" ← The current useless quantum mechanics forces us to use fictional quasiparticle model and bogus one-electron DFT approximation when interpreting observed data, so this kind of claiming (fake) "atomic structure" is just a "publicity stunt" to make the current useless particle colliders "look" useful for COVID-19 research.
