The European Union has drawn up plans to promote investments in natural gas and nuclear power as environmentally sustainable economic activities.

The move comes as the EU aims to bring down global warming gas emissions to net zero by 2050.

The European Commission said in a statement on Saturday that it "considers there is a role for natural gas and nuclear as a means to facilitate the transition toward a predominantly renewable-based future."

France and central and eastern European nations have argued in favor of regarding nuclear energy as sustainable, citing soaring energy prices as a justification for the argument.

But Germany, an anti-nuclear member, was quick to express its opposition to the policy.
