China is shrugging off criticism after the United States announced a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.

Government delegates from the U.S. will not attend the Games. But American athletes will still compete.

"U.S. diplomatic or official representation would treat these Games as business as usual in the face of the PRC's egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang. And we simply can't do that."

White House officials say the treatment of Muslims and other minorities in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region amounts to genocide. And U.S. lawmakers have been calling on President Joe Biden to take a stand.

A spokesperson from the Chinese embassy in Washington is downplaying the boycott. He called the American decision politically manipulative and "a grave distortion of the spirit of the Olympic Charter."
