UN URGES LEADERS TO DECLARE 'CLIMATE EMERGENCY'

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on world leaders to declare states of "climate emergency," urging them to do more to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
- 国連のアントニオ・グテーレス事務総長は、各国の首脳に「気候の非常事態」を宣言するよう要請し、温室効果ガス排出の削減に向けてさらに多くを行うよう促しました。
The UN chief made the appeal at an online summit marking the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement.
- グテーレス国連事務総長は、パリ協定の採択から５周年を記念したオンラインによる首脳会合で、このように訴えました。
"Five years after Paris, we are still not going in the right direction. If we don't change course, we may be headed for a catastrophic temperature rise of more than three degrees this century."
- 「パリ協定から５年が過ぎても、私たちはいまだに正しい方向に進んでいません。このまま方針を変えなければ、今世紀中に３度以上という壊滅的な気温上昇に向かってしまいそうです」
The accord looks to limit the global temperature rise to an average of less than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The UN chief asked if anybody can still deny the world is facing a dramatic emergency.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the summit the 27 EU member countries have agreed on the goal of cutting emissions by at least 55 percent from the 1990 levels by 2030.
- ヨーロッパ委員会のウルズラ・フォンデアライエン委員長は、この会合でＥＵ＝ヨーロッパ連合の２７か国は、２０３０年までに（温室効果ガスの）排出量を１９９０年の水準から少なくとも５５％削減するという目標に合意したと述べました。
The world's biggest emitter, China, has also raised its target.
